How to keep your GIF small

Duration and dimensions make the biggest difference to file size. For chat, email or a quick reaction, trim the clip to three to five seconds and choose a modest width. You will get a faster-loading GIF that still looks sharp at the size people will view it.

When video is a better choice

Choose MP4 when the clip needs sound, runs longer than a few seconds or contains lots of movement and fine detail. Choose GIF for short silent loops, reactions, quick product demos and bug reports that should play immediately.

Why is my GIF so much bigger than the video it came from?

Because GIF has no interframe compression. An MP4 stores mostly the differences between frames; a GIF stores each frame nearly whole. A ten-fold size increase converting a video to a GIF of the same dimensions is normal, not a fault.

Does the GIF keep the audio?

No. The GIF format has no audio track at all, so any sound in the source is dropped. If the sound matters, keep the clip as an MP4 — every platform that accepts a GIF also accepts a silent, autoplaying video.

What length and size should I aim for?

Three to five seconds, 480 pixels wide, 12 frames per second is a good default for chat and documentation. Push the width up before the frame rate: sharper frames read better than smoother motion at this size.

Can I convert a specific moment instead of the whole video?
