Does it work for Spaces or live video?

No. Live broadcasts and Spaces recordings are not standard post media and are not supported.

Why is the quality lower than I expected?

X re-encodes uploads and keeps a limited set of renditions. The tool takes the highest one stored, which can still sit below the creator's original file.
