Why the export size matters as much as the ratio

A very large photo does not automatically create a sharper post. Social platforms resize oversized uploads and may reduce their quality. Exporting at the recommended dimensions gives you more control and creates a smaller file that is ready to publish.

A note on cropping from the centre

Centre-cropping is right most of the time and wrong when the subject sits off to one side — a portrait framed on the left, a product in the lower third. This tool does not try to guess: it takes the middle. If the framing matters and the subject is not centred, crop it deliberately in an editor first and use this to hit the exact export size.

What size should an Instagram post be?

1080 by 1350 for portrait, which is the largest slot in the feed, or 1080 by 1080 for square. Stories and Reels are 1080 by 1920. All three are presets here.

Why not just upload the full-size photo?

Social platforms resize oversized uploads and may reduce their quality. Preparing the image at the recommended dimensions gives you more control and usually uploads faster.

Does it upscale a small image?

No. If the source is smaller than the target dimensions it is left at its own size rather than enlarged, because upscaling adds pixels without adding detail and looks soft.

Can I choose where the crop falls?

Not here — the crop is always centred. For a deliberate crop, frame it in an image editor first and then use this tool to export at the platform's exact dimensions.
